A Different Online Course Experience

Massive Open Online Courses emerged fairly recently, and typically feature an open registration model for online learners worldwide. MOOC's are increasingly packaged to result in University-branded certifications at a nominal fee. Depending on the platform hosting the MOOC, the pedagogical approach may vary; all are utilizing asynchronous engagement in an environment that resembles social networking on a specific subject matter.

Rutgers is currently partnered with Coursera, one of the pioneering platforms, whose motto is to “provide universal access to the world’s best education, partnering with top universities and organizations to offer courses for anyone to take.” Through this partnership Rutgers has produced MOOCs from its Signature Course series, which are available to students across the globe.

Available Options

There are four options available for interested instructors/departments:

  1. Create a single course that can be taken for free or if the student chooses, they may pay for a certificate
  2. Create a series of courses called a "Specialization"; these courses typically lead to a paid "Specialization Certificate"
  3. Develop a degree program
  4. Utilize the Coursera Partner Consortium to supplement your existing Rutgers course.
